Textures

Medium: Index paper mounted on textured matte
Size: 11" x 8.5"
Year: 1997

Textures is a compact yet visually layered original work by Markham, created in 1997 using materials as unassuming as index paper—transformed through composition, mark-making, and presentation. The piece is mounted on a richly patterned textured matte, adding depth and visual intrigue that contrasts with the raw immediacy of the drawing surface.

At its core, Textures plays with repetition, gesture, and materiality. The surface is marked by a rhythmic series of abstract forms, organic and mechanical at once, recalling both the meditative scribbles of automatic drawing and the structural cadence of architectural schematics. Subtle tonal variations and layering suggest the passage of time and intentional imperfection—an ode to process and surface.

Despite its modest scale, the work exudes a sculptural presence when viewed framed. It’s an early example of Markham’s interest in elevating everyday materials to fine art through conceptual framing and intuitive execution.

This piece is in like-new condition and comes framed and wired, ready to hang. An artist-signed certificate of authenticity is included.

Perfect for collectors of minimalist, conceptual, or process-driven works, Textures invites quiet contemplation and rewards close attention.
